The college of Arts and Sciences was originally established in 1959. In 1969, it was split into two colleges: the College of Sciences and the College of Liberal Arts. At present, the College of Sciences houses four departments and two institutes: Departments of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences; and Institutes of Electro-optical Science and Engineering, Satellite Informatics and Earth Environment.
In addition to the above four departments and two institutes, the College of Sciences is also home of four multidisciplinary research centers. They are Earth Dynamic System Research Center, Center for Quantum Information Science, Center for Theoretical Sciences, Plasma and Space Science Center.
