BRIEF INTRODUCTION The objective of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) is to deal with the evaluation and management of functional impairment of patients who suffered from stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, musculoskeletal lesions, congenital and developmental dysfunctions, ¡K etc. The mission of our department is to educate medical students the basic knowledge of PM&R, to train residents to become competent physiatrists in PM&R, and to pursue the advanced knowledge and research in the field of PM&R. The Department of PM&R consists of medical professionals which includes physiatrists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapist, prosthetists and orthotists ¡K and so on.

RESEARCH AREAS The fields of research include electrophysiological study (animal and human) of skeletal muscle, physical medicine modality, gait analysis, assistive technology, and myofascial pain syndrome. ¡@ |

Introduction to PM&R (1 Credit) 1. Rehabilitation Medicine: The purpose of this course is to instruct the significance and philosophy of rehabilitation medicine. Students are expected to learn the general principle in examining and treating patients with various disabilities. 2. Physical Medicine: This course introduces the general principle in application of physical medicine modalities for the diagnosis and treatment of various medical problems. Electrodiagnostic medicine (including electromyography and nerve conduction study) is also included in this course. Therapeutic modalities include exercise therapy, thermotherapy, ultraviolet therapy, electrotherapy, manual therapy, traction therapy, and hydrotherapy. 3. Pain Medicine: The contents of this course cover general principle in assessment and management of acute or chronic pain from various origins, especially from soft tissues (such as muscle, tendon, or ligament). Clinical Practice - for clerkship (2 Credits) In a 3-week course, medical students are given the opportunity to observe the rehabilitation process in various categories including facilities and equipment for rehabilitation. This course also includes lectures on 12 or more different topics. Clinical Practice - for internship (4 Credits) This internship course is arranged for 4-5 weeks. Interns are required to work at outpatient clinics and inpatient wards to participate in patient examination and management. They also have to attend lectures, conferences and other related activities. ¡@ |
