Goal

The objectives of DMI are to educate students about the basic knowledge of medical science, fundamental concepts of microbiology and immunology, and their applications in future research or clinical practice.  In training scientists at a masters and PhD level, we emphasize communication skills, techniques for self-learning, as well as the discipline of academic ethics.
History

To understand the dynamic and vast body of advanced knowledge in these fields, the Division of Microbiology was established in the Department of Medicine in 1984.  Since then, we have further expanded to provide a Masters program (1991) and an integrated Doctoral program (1992), forming the ¡¥Department of Microbiology and Immunology¡¦ (DMI).  The Department is located on the 11th floor of the Medical Research Building. Currently, we have 11 full-time faculty members and 10 adjuncts members.  Our faculty has been trained in various countries, including Taiwan, America, England, Japan, and Germany, respectively.  The diversity of the cultural experiences of DMI members fosters an academic atmosphere of liberty and mutual respect, which are reflected in the wide spectrum of curricula and team work style.  Our students benefit from the multi-disciplinary training and exposure to different academic backgrounds.

The field of microbiology includes four areas subjects: bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and immunology. It combines basic medical sciences and clinical medicine, therefore medical microbiology is offered to undergraduate students, and the objective is to educate students with the basic concepts and applications of these four aspects and to provide the foundations for future research or clinical practice. The establishment of graduate department is to coordinate with the development of medical center of NCKU, to provide training in bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and immunology, and to strengthen the medical education in microbiology, immunology and parasitology.

1.Research and teaching are equally emphasized. Especially focus on seminar training of master¡¦s students. We also organize two Journal clubs, which are hold each week¡G

a. Immunology Journal club

b. Infectious disease of Journal club

2. The communication and collaboration are well established among the faculties in the department. Core laboratories with sophisticated instruments are well managed to and maintained serve the needs of faultily research.

3. To concentrate on important research issues, following research teams are assembled¡Gdengue virus, enterovirus 71, SARS virus, group A streptococcus, Vibrio vulnificus, asthma, cancer, Chinese herb medicine and healthy food. etc.

4. The students will be trained with the spirit of self-displine and optimistical as well as progressive learning attitude to create active academic atmosphere.

5. We have two traditional and academic journal clubs (Immunology and Infectious disease ) held each week in our department.

6. We also have the unique TGIF study meeting, in which humanism, philosophy and scientific thinking are thoroughly discussed.
