The College of Medicine is the youngest of the five colleges which make up the University. To establish a medical college had been one of the long-termgoals of this University. The dream was brought to reality by the government of ROC in 1980 which decided that having a medical college in this region would upgrade the quality of health care in the area, which is by all statistical analysis more inadequate than that in othe regions. In 1982, the project was finally launched under the direction of Dr. Kun-yen Huang who also became the founding dean. The first class of fifty college graduates were recruited in February 1984. The College went through an extremely difficult period between 1984 and 1988 because of lack of adequat facilities. The inadequacy was especially keenly felt on clinical bed-side teaching. The construction of the permanent physical structure, which includes the teaching facilities, research laboratories and a 800-bed hospital started on February 15, 1985 and was completed as scheduled in December, 1988. The College of Medicine has now grown considerably in scope and in size. There are, in addition to medicine, programs in nursing, medical technology, physical therapy and occupational therapy. All these programs are operated at the "faculty" level, and therefore what is known as School of Medicine in the US is referred here as Faculty of Medicine or Department of Medicine. GOALS OF THE COLLEGE The College has set lofty ideals to educate and train future generations of medical, nursing and paramedical professionals who are: 1) Equipped with a broad store of cutting edge knowledge on disciplines concerned. 2) Sufficiently trained to command diagnostic skills of great competence. 3) Capable of self-study and keeping pace with advancements in medical sciences in order to ensure continuous intellectual growth. 4) Highly self-disciplined in their moral considerations and ethical practices and compassionate in healing patients. FUTURE DEVELOPMENT The College will continue its efforts to enroll better qualified students. In order to attain this goal, we will continue to recruit better teachers. The College seek to expand its faculty by attracting teachers who are able to keep effectiveness in teaching and excellence in research in a good balance. The hospital will also continue to streamline its administrative efficiency in order to meet the needs of clinical teaching and training and challenges of health care demands in the region.
