 I. Brief Introduction

The Foreign Language Center of the College of Liberal Arts evolved from the “Language Laboratory of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature,” which was founded in August 1970.  With gradual purchasing of audio-visual equipments and other facilities, the Center has developed into a full-fledged language center capable of serving students and faculty members of the University.  In 2000, the Center moved to the current location at Hsiu-Chi Building, a newly finished 7-floor building then.  The Center occupies the first, second, and third floor with easy access to its classrooms and laboratories. In addition, the Center has recently opened a “Self-learning Language Laboratory” with 50 computer-provided carrels and nine booths with traditional audio-visual equipments. They serve as a place for NCKU students language learning and speech training.

 II. Future Development

Based on the need of English and other foreign languages in our modern lives, the Center will continue to cooperate with the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature to hold an “English Comprehensive Test” for the freshmen to improve students’ learning motives and provide incentives to encourage self-study.  In the meanwhile, the Center will seek opportunities to cooperate with LTTC, ETS, or other language centers to hold English exit tests for NCKU graduating students.  In the future the Center is going to expand its facilities and materials in order to further help students in English training, placement tests, and other evaluation tests.  It is anticipated that this Center will eventually become the best language teaching and testing site in southern Taiwan and hence to be accredited by respected national organizations.
