Research Interests

A major focus of my research has been on the signaling pathways for the excitation-contraction coupling of vascular smooth muscle. Regulation of smooth muscle contraction involves multiple pathways and extensive fine tuning and underlies vascular disorders including hypertension and atherosclerosis. My current research is focused on the roles of a small GTP-binding protein Rho in smooth muscle contractility and on defining its upstream and downstream links in the signaling pathways. Another research aspect of mine has involved the factors contributing to atherogenesis. Since smooth muscle cells, a key player for atherosclerosis development, undergo significant modification during atherogenesis, a future direction is heading towards smooth muscle development and differentiation.
