History
In order to meet a growing need for international cultural exchange, the "Experimental
Chinese Language Center" was established in the Fall of 1982. The center
was later expanded, and the name was changed to the "National Cheng Kung
University, College of Liberal Arts, Chinese Language Center". Since the
completion of the new Xiu Qi Building in June 2000, and due to a generous contribution
of space by NCKU, the Language Center has been able to offer an excellent learning
environment for those wishing to study Chinese.
Curriculum
The course design is based on a two-year program, during which students progress
through beginner, basic, intermediate and advanced stages. Apart from the usual
small group classes, the Center also offers individualized instruction, which
currently consists of a combination of individual classes and small group tutorials.
This method is designed to introduce more interest and variety into the learning
process. Special courses are designed for study tours, which take into account
the length of the tour and the requirements of the group.
In addition, the center organizes free cultural courses taught by specially
invited experts, from which students may choose to supplement their standard
10 hours of class. These classes cover such fields as Chinese painting, calligraphy,
Chinese opera, Tai Chi, movie conversation, drama, Taiwanese, folk song appreciation,
audio-visual education and basic and intermediate writing.
It is hoped these courses will promote international cultural exchange, advance
friendship between people of different races, and provide a stepping-stone into
the Department of Chinese or other departments for foreign students wishing
to conduct research in the field of Sinology and other areas.
Teaching Staff
1. Optional Courses: The center employs university professors or specialist
teachers to teach these courses.
2. Study Tour and Small Group Courses: These courses are taught by extremely
experienced and professional teachers.
3. Individual Classes: Teachers for these classes are mostly outstanding higher-level
students or graduates from the NCKU College of Liberal Arts, College of Management
or College of Social Sciences. All of those selected have passed a stringent
entrance examination and received specialist training.
Teaching Facilities
The center is housed in a new building which offers a very comfortable learning
environment, and is fully equipped with audio-visual and computer facilities.
Apart from class rooms for individual and small group instruction, it also offers
facilities for students to engage in practice and self-guided learning, including:
a multi-media computerized language laboratory; a role-play room; an audio-visual
classroom; individualized listening rooms; a reading room and calligraphy classroom;
a library; individual classrooms; small-group classrooms; small classrooms etc.
